Midwife Directory

We are often contacted by families looking for a midwife that works in the out of hospital setting.  Better Beginnings does not offer birth services, nor do we recommend any particular midwife.  We do support you as you explore your options.

Currently, Mississippi does not license non-nurse midwives, called direct entry midwives.  This means that the midwives that specialize in out-of-hospital birth in our state are not licensed or regulated by the government.  Any person is legally allowed to offer midwifery services, regardless or experience or training.  As the consumer, the responsibility lies on you to verify education, skills and experience of any person you hire as a midwife.  Often times, midwives have the designation CPM (Certified Professional Midwife), you can learn more about it here.

Direct entry midwives do not accept insurance as payment.  However, depending on your insurance provider, you may be able to submit your receipts to your insurance company and be reimbursed as an "out of network provider" - to determine eligibility, contact your insurance company.   Medicaid in MS does not cover any cost for direct entry midwives.

We encourage you to meet with more than midwife as you consider who is the right fit for your family.  Here is a great article about interviewing midwives that will help you as your prepare for those meetings.

Below we have done our best to provide a list of all direct entry midwives who work in south Mississippi.  We are not suggesting these midwives are a good fit for you.  We can not confirm their skills or competency at all.  We are not responsible for any outcomes.  This is simply a list of names we have been told are working as midwives.
