Birth stories are powerful.  In their writing, mothers have an opportunity for celebration, reflection, and/or healing. When a mother chooses to share her story, as the women below have, she invites us into the private moments of one of the most important days of her life.  Moments full of deep emotion and intimate interactions.   Each family is unique and each story is important: natural birth, hospital birth, home birth, cesarean birth, healthy babies, sick babies, birth with interventions and birth without. We invite you to read these stories with an open mind and kind heart.
Mamas, Thank you for sharing with us.
We all have a story. Our story paints a picture of what has happened and marks a particular point of view. With each story, we invite another into our life: listen to me, see as I see, feel what I feel, share with me, know me.  In telling the story, we find meaning and purpose.
The listener has a part in the story, too. As we listen, their essence imprints on our memory and we begin to feel within our hearts.  Their story teaches us what is important and prepares us for similar circumstances
A story changes and renews us.

When my husband Sean and I found out we were expecting a child together a few months after getting married, we were both surprised and excited. We have a wonderful five year old boy, Noah, who is mine from a previous marriage. We've enjoyed parenting him together and were excited for Sean to experience pregnancy and birth this time around. The first thing we did was start looking for a home birth midwife and a doula. We were disappointed to discover that the home birth, in the state of Mississippi, is not covered by our insurance policy. So, we decided our best route was to labor at home for as long as possible and birth at the hospital with our sweet doula, Bianca. Sean was so loving and supportive of me in whatever I felt I needed to do.

It was a Wednesday morning, I was right around 40 weeks. The day before I was really exhausted and I went to the chiropractor and to the grocery store and then went back to bed for the rest of the day, so naturally the house had really fallen apart after a day of not really doing any cleaning. Wednesday morning I woke up with a good amount of energy and I was grateful for it because I had a lot to do around the house. I was accomplishing a lot and felt pretty good and then around 10:30 I had just the tiniest amount of bloody show.

The morning of April 28th: I woke early in the morning, my usual routine to
quickly use the bathroom and hop back in bed to get a few more hours of sleep. This morning was different as I realized from looking down that my body had started to prepare itself for labor. I often wonder who came up with terms like mucous plug and bloody show. Needless to say, my body had decided to begin the long three-day labor to bring my baby boy into the world.

Even before I was pregnant I knew I wanted a natural birth. I figured if millions of women in the history of humanity had given birth without the assistance modern medicine had to offer, why couldn’t I do it also? To give myself the highest chance of success I bought multiple books on various birthing techniques and some with inspiration and positive birth stories to help me stay focused and optimistic. I even researched doulas and chose Bianca at Better Beginnings to help me through this uncharted territory of giving birth.

Well it all started Saturday morning around 12:30 a.m. when I woke up and the bed was soaked, I knew right then, Oh no, my water had broken!! I didn't want my labor to start by my water breaking because I was Group B Strep Positive which meant I had to go to the Birth Center every 4 hours during my labor to get an IV of antibiotics and that also meant I was on a time clock to get him out or I would have to be transferred to the hospital.

We welcomed Kyle Lon Lovejoy on Monday April 28, 2014. I was 41 w 2 days. The night before, around 5pm I drank castor oil. I don’t recommend it. We had tried all other natural methods of induction and nothing seemed to be working. Nothing seemed to happen so I went to bed as usual. I then woke up at midnight with cramping and needed to go to the bathroom, then went back to sleep.

It was Thursday, August 22, and my husband, Baxter, and I just sat down to a relaxing evening at home after working a full day and attending a committee meeting that evening. We were watching TV when I felt a trickle of water. I rushed to the bathroom and more came out. I was in denial at first, and Baxter was trying to convince me that indeed my water had broken. I decided to wait and see what happened and more water just kept flowing so we called our doula, Bianca.

On Friday, March 8th, 2013 I woke up feeling different but I couldn’t figure out why. I had one really big contraction that morning and dismissed it as Braxon Hicks. I took Lydia to school, met up with a girlfriend for a pedicure and lunch, and as soon as I got home (around noon) and sat down to pee my water broke!
That was it. Nothing else. No contractions, no nothing.

It’s been about two and a half weeks since the birth of my son and his day of birth is something I have spent a lot of time thinking about every day.  Cullen’s birth was very much the opposite of the amazing, magical birth that I had spent so many hours imagining.

I am a planner.  I plan.  Everything.  So of course I spent a lot of time researching and planning for something as important as the birth of my first child.  I read books, I read countless articles and blogs online, and I took an awesome Lamaze class.

On July 16, 2012 my husband, Rob, and I joked, yet again, at the possibility of me being pregnant. We went to Winn Dixie and while there bought pregnancy tests. In the car on the way home he made a joke that made sensitive enough to tear up. That should have been the first sign! As a side note I must add that I have always had these “scares” because of very irregular periods.
On July 17, 2012 at 7:30 am I found out I was indeed pregnant. I sent a picture of the test to my husband while he was at work. After hearing nothing for about an hour or so, I texted him again telling him he needed to respond! Rob had thought that I was joking and it was some random picture I found.

When I was 36 weeks, we had a growth sonogram and found out that Kiersten was breech.  At this point, she had one foot under her and one foot up by her head (not an ideal birthing position).  Our OB was also a little concerned about my amniotic fluid as it was measuring low, but not at a critical level yet.

(Note: This is not a better beginnings client.  However, it is a client of our friends in Jackson, Lions Heart Doula Services.
It's times like this I wish I were a writer and could describe my experience in words that would serve it justice, but I'm not so I will just have to take my sons advice......."Just peeetend mommy",
so here it goes!!
The entire last month of my pregnancy  I experienced pre-labor, which made me believe everyday was the day, to no avail. It got to the point of Chris ignoring me when I expressed concerns of being in labor, I didn't blame him though!
